Gentlemen this issue has now been resolved and tested. It was related to a "Hook" installed on the system that allows users to "like" someone else's status. In order to correct this problem the "like" ability has been removed.

Are you referring to the "Like" button? If yes, than no it was not this button, there should have been some ability to like status updates, and that is the button/link that was disabled by removing the hook. The "Like" button for the posts is still relevant.
