thout being too dramatic... I am only alive because my car is fuelled by diesel. A metal plate dropped off the SUV I was following. At 70mph, I had no choice but to drive over the metal plate. It ruptured the fuel lines and punctured the fuel tank. This sprayed about 20 litres of fuel was sprayed all over the hot exhaust. The police accident investigator told me it was fortunate the car was diesel and not petrol as it would have most probably have been a very different incident... It would have ignited.

That aside, a like-for-like car, like my BMW 218d Gran Coupé returns around 59mpg, the petrol equivalent 218i, is about 40mpg. So almost 50% greater efficiency in diesel over petrol. Topping that, the petrol model produces upto 149-128 g/km of CO2 with the diesel being 136-118g/km of CO2. Diesel burning more completely, and cleaner than petrol.

The diesel provides 148bhp @350nm of torque with the petrol at 136bhp @220nm of torque.

Diesel is safer as its combustible, petrol is flammable! Petrol has a fairly low flashpoint at −43 °C (−45 °F). This means that, unless you're in one of the coldest places in the world, your petrol fuel is above its flashpoint. Diesel, on the other hand, enjoys a mid-range flash point of over 52 °C (126 °F), meaning the exact opposite!

At the pump here, petrol is £1.519 per litre with diesel being 10p more expensive at £1.619 per litre. That's £6.83 an imperial gallon for petrol and £7.28 for an imperial gallon of diesel... But the diesel goes 50% further. Yes, on a new car there's about a £3,000 more, to buy a diesel model over a petrol one. But on pre-owned models it's no where near that.

Diesel... Safer - always. Better for the environment on Euro6 models. (old diesels aren't as good). Servicing costs are similar. Tyres, brakes, oil, filters, both (petrol & diesel) about 12,500 miles. If anything, my current diesel car is on 15,000 mile service intervals. About 10 years ago I owned a 2010 Citroën C5 2.0 turbo diesel, and that was on 20,000 mile service intervals.

I'd leave it at, "it's each to their own." diesel is often seen as sluggish, but my current diesel fuelled car has a 0-60mph time of 5.5sec.

I only know what I know, by ignoring the press, as looking it up myself.

Good research. Unfortunately diesel is about dead in USA except for industrial applications and larger pickup trucks. I didn’t find one diesel offering from BMW or VW for a passenger vehicle let alone Ford, GM, etc.

    The push to electric vehicles….

Diesel - every single time (if anyone is bored, I'll happily explain why!)

    Leather or fabric seats?

I would take gasoline for economic, maintenance, and environmental most of the time. Exception is for high torque or pulling applications.  The initial cost of a diesel option over gas is hard to justify financially in lots of cases.
